Computer models for the simulation of crowds represent a consolidated type of application, employed on a day-to-day basis to support designers and decision makers. Most state of the art models, however, generally do not consider the explicit representation of pedestrians aggregations (groups) and their implications on the overall system dynamics. This work is aimed at discussing a research effort systematically exploring the potential implication of the presence of groups of pedestrians in different situations (e.g. changing density, spatial configurations of the environment).

Developing a Sense of Place by Humanizing Public Pedestrian Precincts

This research paper lays stress on philosophies of human desire. All the human being has some psychical need in addition to physical needs. And to satisfy the psychical needs, there is a need for stimulants, more in case of exclusive pedestrian precincts. Having exclusively Pedestrian precincts/Cores in city design draws its inspiration from the fact that public zones, accessible to majority of...

Investigating the effect of social groups in uni-directional pedestrian flow

The influence of cohesion among members of dyads is investigated in scenarios characterized by uni-directional flow by means of a discrete model: a corridor and the egress from a room with a bottleneck of varying width are simulated. The model manages the dynamics of simulated group members with an adaptive mechanism, balancing the probability of movement according to the dispersion of the grou...

Social life, evolution of intelligence, behaviour and human brain size

Social life is one of the most critical factors of the evolution of the behavior of non-human primates and humans. Several factors, such as an increase in brain size, adaptive modules, and grooming, are related to the complexities of social groups. Although some scientists have mentioned foraging as a rival hypothesis for the evolution of behavior, in this research, we tried to investigate the ...

Models of Pedestrian Adaptive Behaviour in Hot Outdoor Public Spaces

Current studies of outdoor thermal comfort are limited to calculating thermal indices or interviewing people. The first method does not take into account the way people use this space, whereas the second one is limited to one particular study area. Simulating people’s thermal perception along with their activities in public urban spaces will help architects and city planners to test their conce...

The role of family cohesion and adaptability and emotion regulation in predicting the social intimacy of female students

The impact of family function, especially cohesion and adaptability in the regulation of children’s emotion, can have significant implications for the development of their next relationships, including intimate relationships in early youth. The aim of this study was to determine the role of family cohesion and flexibility and emotions regulation in predicting social intimacy. For this purpose, ...
